Joseph A. Van
Houten, age 61 of Sunbury died early Thursday morning, March 6, 2008
at Mt. Carmel West.
He was born on May 16, 1946 in Hilliard to the late Arthur and
Juanita Van Houten. A graduate of Hilliard High School in 1964, he
wore number 43, playing half back on the football team and also ran
track. He attended The Ohio State University and was a US Marine
Corp veteran.
At the age of four he dreamed of becoming a pilot, saving his lunch
money to attend flight school. He worked over 35 years for Lane
Aviation in both the capacities of pilot and director of operations
for the flight department.
He was a member of the Professional Pilots Association and attended
Genoa Baptist Church. Joe enjoyed the races at Mid-Ohio and
Indianapolis 500, hunting deer with his muzzle loader, a good cigar,
a cold Budweiser, and reading the Dispatch
Kind spoken, a loyal friend, he was dedicated to his field. With
many interests, he was mechanically inclined, enjoyed woodcrafts and
football. He collected arrowheads, a collection spanning 5 family
generations and was a wonderful father and husband.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years Beth (Riggs), son Joseph both
of Sunbury and a brother John of Mt. Vernon.
Preceded in death by brother Al.
Friends may call Sunday 2-5 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s
3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will be held Monday 11:00 a.m.,
with Pastors Frank Carl and J R Smith officiating. Burial will
follow in Berkshire Cemetery with military honors provided by the
Delaware County Veterans Association.
