Robert J. Brown of Columbus, Ohio passed peacefully on Friday, October 16, 2026, at the age of 96. Known as “Bob” to his family and friends, he was born on May 31, 1930, in Pinckneyville, Illinois to Reverend Lewis and Helen Brown.
Bob attended Muskingum College where he met his beloved wife, Ruth. They were married on June 14, 1952. He continued his studies at Youngstown College and The Ohio State University.
Bob proudly served his country for 22 years in the United States Air Force. He enlisted in 1951 in the USAF Aviation Cadet program and graduated with the Class of 1952G. He served as a fighter pilot and squadron administrative officer in Maine, Oklahoma and Japan. He later joined the Ohio Air National Guard and was deployed to Korea during the Pueblo incident. He retired from the OANG in 1973 as a Lieutenant Colonel and Command Pilot.
In his civilian career, Bob worked for North American Aviation (Rockwell and Boeing) as a Publications Analyst contributing to government projects. He also was a commercial pilot, an FAA Certified Flight Instructor/Pilot Examiner and member of the Columbus Chapter of the Professional Pilots Association.
Faith, family and community were central to Bob’s life where he formed many lifelong friendships. Joining Shady Lane Presbyterian Church in 1959, he served as an Elder, Deacon, Clerk of Session and choir member.
Bob enjoyed traveling, golf and camping, but most of all cherished his time with family and friends. He will always be remembered for his integrity, showing up for special events and everyday happenings, and offering his steadfast support to others.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Alice Backstrom Brown; parents, Lewis and Helen Brown; brother, Joseph Brown (Pat); sisters, Margaret Sims (Jim) and H. Clementine Munholand (Howard); daughter, Karen Ann Rowe (Joe) and daughter-in-law, Rebecca Brown. He is survived by his sons, Keith (Diane) and Gary (Kim); his grandchildren, Michael (Autumn), Joel Rowe (Julia), Faye, and Lila (Andrew); his great-grandchildren, Ethan, Andrew, and Gage; his sister-in-law, Eva Marsico and many nieces and nephews.
In Bob’s memory the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
Bob’s family will receive friends on Saturday, October 31, 2026 beginning at 9:30am at the Cotner Funeral Home, 7369 E. Main St. Reynoldsburg, OH 43068 where his funeral service will be held at 11:00am with Pastor Andy Smith officiating. Interment to follow at Glen Rest Memorial Estates.
