Gene Helmick, age 84, Monday, March 6, 2017 at Riverside Hospital.
Born May 31, 1932 in Clarksburg, West Virginia. 1951 graduate of Gahanna Lincoln High School. Attended Capital University. U.S. Air Force Veteran, stationed in Okinawa Japan during the Korean conflict. Gene was also in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Member of Knights of Columbus. Retired from Wolfe Industry where he worked as a pilot. After retirement, he built and owned Hillcrest Stables in Johnstown because of his passion for horses.
Preceded in death by parents Beulah and Roy Helmick and son-in-law John Laufersweiler and sister-in-law Muriel Helmick and brother-in-law Chuck Alff. Survived by loving wife of 60 years, Margaret “Peggy” Tanner Helmick; children, Cynthia Schillig (Mark Hardgrove), Carol (Michael) Laufersweiler-Edwards, Gary (Christine) Helmick; grandchildren, Matt, Katie, Ashley Schillig, Ryan and Shannon Laufersweiler, Mike and Sabrina Clark; 11 great grandchildren; brother, Ray Helmick; sisters, Kitty (Jim) Quick and Carol Alff; nieces and nephews; and dear friend and family prayer partner, Phyllis Sizemore.
Visitation Wednesday 3-7 p.m. at the MAEDER-QUINT-TIBERI Funeral Home, 1068 S. High St. Prayer service 6:45 p.m. Family and friends are invited to meet at Maeder-Quint-Tiberi for prayer and final viewing at 9 a.m. Thursday with procession to church or you may meet at church for the Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John Neumann Church, 9633 E. State Route 37, Sunbury, Ohio. Burial to follow Resurrection Cemetery. Father David W. Sizemore, Celebrant.
